In 1903, a U.S. missionary named William Edgar Gaye came to China. For more than 20 years, the hardworking American inspected the areas along the Yangtze River and the Great Wall, and later went to more big cities and boarded the Five Sacred Mountains of China. He has left us with more than 500 images of Chinese and Chinese landscapes in the era of great change and plenty of written records. At that time, there was a lifeboat on the Yangtze River, and the lifeboat was red, commonly known as the Yangtze River Red Boat. These rescue boats are also run by private officials. The figure behind the boat on the left is the red boat.
