As these scientists stepped into middle age, they saw the absurd treatment of science in the Soviet Union under the rule of Stalinism. As they entered old age, they had to confront the complexities confronting science - nuclear weapons, high-tech wars, military and industrial enterprises and ecological movements. Every one of them struggled to preserve the enlightenment and progress of science, but everyone had to suffer a great deal of pain, disappointment and shame. - British scholar Robert Yang said in a biography of British scientists and socialists in the 1930s.
