This paper presents an experimental study of a vehicle-mounted smoke sensor for diesel engines. The sensing element is similar to a typical spark plug. Electricity to the insulator has been used to avoid contamination of diesel soot. The sensing element creates a spark in the exhaust pipe. The change in smoke density is determined by analyzing the spark voltage. The system was tested on a heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) unit and compared with the filter smoke value (FSN). Experiments have shown that the system has a good perception of the gradual change of smoke (achieved by EGR values) below 0.5 FSN. However, the sensor is affected by temperature-induced signal drift and in some cases is not stable. The use of a spark plug with a smaller electrode tip diameter improves signal stability. The authors note that in order to control signal drift, it is necessary to measure and control the electrode temperature.
