Djuna Barnes (1892-1982) is one of the most curious female writers in the history of American literature in the 20th century. Her creation of life is not much, but her deliberate depiction of life decadent and emotional dissimilation does bring some vitality to the modern American literary world. The puzzling and grotesque revealed by her novels are forward-looking and deserve to be typical experimental examples of modernist novels of the 1920s and 1930s. Barnes’s extensive use of the technique of stream-of-consciousness and his subtle portrayal of the psychology of his characters can be compared with Joyce’s and Faulkner’s. She is a unique voice that came out of the 20th century American literary world. Barnis was born in a Bohemian family, his mother was a violin lover, and often wrote poetry; his father was a cynical, playful woman who had neither a permanent job nor a father’s sense of responsibility. Later the family moved to Long Island, soon separated their parents. Due to family reasons, Barnes has been unable to go to school as a child. Later, she finally entered a Manhattan art school, learning painting.
