Objective To improve the individual’s self-discipline in the prevention and control of sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS and to carry out interventions in community target populations. Methods Twenty-six individual physicians in eight-step urban areas were trained in the knowledge, prevention, and control of STD and AIDS, and they were technically guided, standardized in diagnosis and treatment, and used their behaviors to intervene in community target groups during routine diagnosis and treatment. Results In the 18 months of intervention, individual physicians distributed 1,339 condoms and 17736 publicity materials to the community target population; 543 cases were referred to sexually transmitted diseases; 16 cases were referred to test patients; 17 cases reported sexually transmitted diseases; AIDS prevention knowledge increased from an average of 59.8 points before the intervention to 82.0 points during the final assessment. After eight years of intervention, the average annual incidence of STDs decreased by 13.33% in 2005 compared with 2004 before. Conclusion It is feasible and effective to rely on individual physicians to carry out interventions for sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS.
