This article uses the concept of “repetition and revision” in black literary criticism to study the topic of incest in African American literature. Based on the three levels of gender, race and class, Ellison’s Invisible Man and Morrie Sen’s “Bluest Eye” as its reference, analyzes Walker’s revision of Ellison and Morrison in “Purple Color” and explores the pros and cons of Walker’s text in the process of amending the pre-existing text. This article argues that Walker’s revision and subversion of both Ellison and Morrison’s gender, race and class perspectives through repeated incest motifs, as well as inheritance and development, are an important cross-gender black American literary tradition text.
