管家是狂言中出场最多的家仆的代表,“院子”是戏曲中家仆的统称。管家与院子都从属于主人、听命于主人,在剧中既发挥着结构剧情的作用又不时制造出谐谑、滑稽的艺术效果,二者在艺术功能上有着相似的特性。狂言中的管家时而现身为襄助主人的帮手,时而成为捉弄主人的对手,在剧中承担比较重要的造笑功能。院子虽然也通过插科打诨来制造谐谑的效果,但基本上都是以襄助主人的正面形象出现,且大多具有古道热肠,急公好义的特点。
