京剧在国外的通用译名是Peking Opera(北京歌剧),是否还可以有更好的译法,不是本文所要讨论的。而我觉得,这个译名不无可取,它在一定程度上反映了京剧这种艺术的本质属性。先从Opera这个词说起,它的中译名为歌剧。歌剧者,以歌唱演出之戏剧也。这与以对话演出的戏剧(中国叫话剧,外国叫Drama)有别。所以,西洋的歌剧,是以唱(音乐)为主的,歌剧演员,必须是歌唱家,方能胜任,不善于歌唱的演员,就不能去演歌剧。
