The Claisen-Schmidt reaction between β-diketone promoted by Ba (OH) _2 and aromatic aldehydes was studied. The reaction products may be monoolefins or diolefins. The formation of monoolefins involves the cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds, The alkene product is a three-membered ring analog of curcumin.
