堂堂“(京堂)”,底从土,原指土筑高台,即今日所称“台基”。《墨子》:“尧堂高三尺,土阶三等”。所谓“堂”,并非殿堂之堂。否则,尧堂高三尺,人是走不进去的。堂作为殿堂的称呼殆在以,《荀子·儒效》:“诸侯趋走堂下”。系指正房。唐·刘禹钖《鸟衣苟》诗:“旧时王谢堂前燕,飞入寻常百姓家”(鸟衣巷遗址在今江苏南京夫子庙附近)。唐·苏鹗《演义》:“堂,当也,当正向阳之屋。又明也,言明礼义之所”。为此,庭园中的堂,必居中轴线和面南朝向,取其堂堂高大开敞之意。《园冶》亦主此说,“凡园圃立基,定厅堂为主,先乎取景,妙在朝南”。这就是说,建造厅堂首先要注意到取景问题,并以南向向阳为宜。从习惯上说,厅与堂是以体形
