During the century since the Meiji Restoration, Japan has been rushing toward modernization. In most cases, modernization means Westernization. The change in lifestyle from sitting on a tatami to using a table in a western lifestyle is one of the goals of modernization. As a result of this modernization, today’s Japanese families are accustomed to using tables and chairs and sleeping in bed. These are also fully reflected in the flat of a modern house, but it should be emphasized that although the number of tatami-style houses is decreasing, the tatami-style houses are decreasing. The spirit cannot disappear.
