美术馆是伴随城市的崛起而发展起来的,城市的中心功能和特性为美术馆的运营和发展奠定了基础,美术馆则以其富有活力的文化传播姿态为城市塑造了良好形象,成为现代城市的文化新坐标。20世纪90年代以来,中国的城市化进程快速推进,城市的综合实力不断增强,市民对于公共文化的需求日益增长,美术馆的建设浪潮迅猛掀起,并成为现代城市的阶段性文化命题。与此同时,美术馆从业人员对城市的发展状态更为关注,不再把美术馆与城市仅仅视为静态的空间关系,而是积极地寻求一种互动,明确美术馆在城市发展中的位置,力求使之成为城市的公共文化活动中心。
