If the ongoing trials of the Royal Australian Navy succeed, then Australia's continental shelf charts can be drawn with an airborne laser depth detector. In order to measure the sea depth, the infrared light output by the Nd: YAG laser and its frequency-doubled green light are shot from the plane to the sea at the same time. Since most of the infrared light is reflected by the sea surface, the green light is reflected by the sea bottom penetrating the sea. In this way, the water depth can be calculated from the delay between two pulses returned to the onboard receiver. According to V.J.M. Bosher of the Australian Defense Research Center in Adelaide, depths of 30 meters can be measured at a resolution of one meter in the clear shore of the sea. The research center's electronics research laboratory is developing such a laser system. The Australian Navy will decide this summer whether to buy for its hydrographic survey
