三门峡市是1957年伴随万里黄河第一坝——三门峡水利枢纽工程的建设,在陕州故城遗址上崛起的一座新兴城市。相传大禹治水,用神斧将高山劈成“人门、神门、鬼门”三道峡谷,三门峡由此而得名。又因古代其境内有崤山和函谷关,拥有崤函之固,历来为兵家要塞。三门峡是华夏文明的发祥地之一。五六千年以前这里就出现了较大的氏族部落。公元前21～前13世纪,这里是夏商王朝统治的中心区域。西周属虢国,秦置三川郡,西汉为河南府,汉武帝时置弘农郡,北魏置陕州后一直延续至明、清。三门峡市区座落在黄河南岸阶地上,三面临三门峡水库,形似半岛,是“四面环山三面水”的带状自然山水城市,现辖渑池县、陕县、卢氏县3县和义马市、灵宝市2市、湖滨区和三门峡经济技术开发区,建成区面积46平方公里,公共绿地覆盖率36.6%,常年水面333公顷。三门峡市相继获得中国优秀旅游城市、中国特色魅力城市、全国水土保持生态环境建设示范城市称号。如今,三门峡正为争创国家级森林城市而努力着,这颗昔日黄河岸边的璀璨明珠,正以越来越浓郁的绿色呈现在世人面前。
