当代装置作品非常强调物的现场感,以及物品材质的运用在文化语境里的表现,作者语意的传达往往通过社会针对性或隐喻的方式透过特殊材质外化出来。但前一类装置作品由于太过于注重实效和新闻杂文的功能,通常易被指责为社会和政治观念的附庸,倒不是说艺术直接为政冶服务,此类艺术通常反对和质疑当下的主流意识形态,只是其表达的方式过于直接,缺乏了对作品材质中意蕴的挖掘(或者说材质本身仅仅充当观念理解
