Our society has become highly dependent on a variety of modern communication systems such as radio, television, telephone, telegraph, fax, high-speed data transmitters and more. In fact, dense information accounts for a large proportion of the information transmitted on these lines. In these places, the communicator should take some measures to make the content of the message concealed, not only for unintentional observers but also for full-time interceptors. There is no doubt that the issue of the protection and secrecy of communications will continue to grow at an ever-increasing rate not only in the traditional military area but also in the open commercial area in the coming years. This article studies several cryptosystems currently in use. While discussing the mathematical and statistical requirements for these systems, this article also explores how meticulous design can satisfy most of these requirements while minimizing the complexity of hardware implementation.
