In recent years, many studies confirm that the thalamus and pain are closely related. We have recorded both painful and pain-suppressing neuronal discharges in the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus. It has also been reported that midbrain reticular cells also exhibit excitatory and inhibitory effects on noxious stimuli. Electrical stimulation of central gray matter can affect parainfluency and pain inhibition of neuronal activity. These works provide the basis for elucidating the mechanism of pain and the central role of integrating harmful information.
