In most microorganisms pyruvate production is catalyzed by pyruvate kinase. In E. histolytica and several other bacteria, pyruvate production is catalyzed by pyruvate dikinase. The authors reported on the primary structure of pyruvate dikinase of Giardia lamblia and its close relationship with other bio-related enzymes and their evolutionary origin.
