新写实主义小说在新时期小说创作过程中表现出过渡性并呈现出反叛性特征。其一，反叛经典现实主义关于典型环境中典型人物的创作原则，只注重个体的或细节的真实。其二，新写实主义小说反叛传统的文以载道的观念，拒绝作者主观情感介入。其三，新写实主义小说反叛传统悲剧观念，注重发掘人物个体性格因素对其命运的影响。新写实主义小说的不足之处是：淡化了文学的社会价值观念；人物失去了典型意义；小说创作流于自然主义的描写倾向。新写实主义小说创作的发展方向是回归现实主义。
Neo-realistic novels show transitional features and rebound characteristics in the novel creation process in the new period. First, the principle of rebellion of classical realism about the typical characters in a typical environment focuses on the individual or details of the truth. Second, the neo-realist novels rebel against the traditional concept of containing words and reject the author’s subjective feelings. Third, the neo-realist novels rebel against traditional tragedy concepts and pay attention to discovering the influence of individual personality factors on their fate. The inadequacies of the new realistic novels are as follows: the social values of literature are downplayed; the characters lose their typical meaning; and the novel writing flows in the descriptive tendencies of naturalism. The development direction of the new realistic novels is the return to realism.
