Infectious mononucleosis (IMN) usually occurs in young people, most people over the age of 40 are considered previously exposed to Epstein-Barr virus with immunity to infection. In previous reports, heterophile antibodies over 40 years old accounted for only 0.76 to 2.2% of patients with IMN. Due to the atypical illness of these patients, it often leads to delays in diagnosis. For this reason, the authors conducted a retrospective, controlled study of the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients over 40 years of age and younger patients. Participants: 17 cases of IMN patients 40 to 78 years old and 17 cases of IMN patients aged 10 to 17 who were admitted to hospital for more than 4 days as study group and control group respectively. Both groups met the following diagnostic criteria: (1) positive for heterophile antibodies; (2) counts of lymphocytes ≥ blood leukocytes
