Previous studies reported a significant overestimation of the Sentinel-5 Precursor (S-5P) official operational SO2 product in global SO2 emissions [1,2].As such, China successfully launched the GaoFen-5 satellite into the sun-synchronous polar orbit on May 9, 2018 [3].Onboard the GeoFen-5 satellite is a payload called Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI;Fig.1a).It is the first Chinese satellite-based ultraviolet-visible imaging spectrometer that can be used to detect trace gases, such as ozone (O3), formaldehyde (HCHO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) [4].Thus, China has independently developed a hyperspectral and high-spatial-resolution satellite for the remote sensing of tropospheric pollutants, so it cuts off its long-term dependence on foreign satellite data.
