Patients with an automated defibrillator often use amiodarone as an adjunct to recurrent ventricular tachyarrhythmias. This experiment shows that immediate intravenous amiodarone significantly reduces the energy required for defibrillation, whereas long term oral administration of amiodarone has no significant effect on the energy required for defibrillation. Twelve mongrel dogs (mean male and female) weighing 23.6 (19.5-28.6) kg were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and intubated to control respiration and chest open to reveal the heart.
