No. 1, 1992, introduced some of the environmental problems posed by uranium production in uranium mines in the states of Saxony and Thuringia in eastern Germany. This article continues to report on the progress of underground mine management and surface rehabilitation in the region following the reunification of Germany. The massive governance plan of 13 billion marks will last 10 to 15 years. Several waste rock piles that have completed their governance work have been able to continue farming on the surface or to open parks or build residential areas on them. Radon measurements in the monitoring area show that it is below the outdoor radon concentration limit of 80Bq · m -3 recommended by the German Federal Commission on Radiological Protection.
