《神农本草经》记载上品药无毒,久服不伤人,有轻身益气,不老延年的功效。其中主含三萜皂甙药物有人参、甘草、牛膝、远志、黄芪、续断、旋花、地肤子、沙参、王不留行、酸枣、大枣。含甾体皂甙有天门冬、麦门冬、薯蓣、白英、蒺藜子。近年研究皂甙有促进免疫功能,抗癌、防治心脑血管疾病、防止衰老、强壮益智,促进核糖酸及蛋白质的合成,补血、降低血清胆固醇,调节血糖作用,抗菌抗病毒和抗炎作用,保护肝损伤等功能。其效用与《神农本草经》记载吻合。提示可以从上述皂甙药物中研究开发有防治心脑血管疾病,抗肿瘤、防衰老及滋补强壮药。
