The localization and quantitation of Langerhans cells (LCs) in sebaceous units of 10 normal skin follicles were detected by immunohistochemistry with anti-CD1a monoclonal antibody. The results showed that LC mainly concentrated in the middle of the hair follicles: an average of 1987 per hair follicle (range of 8 to 54) in the funnel, an average of 1635 (range of 7 to 34) in the sebaceous duct and glandular epithelium, the distribution density Similar to the epidermis; on the contrary, the number of LCs in the lower part of the hair follicles decreased significantly, with an average of 4.16 / hair follicles, mainly in the vicinity of the bulge in the upper part of the hair follicles; CD1a-positive LCs were hardly seen in the hair bulb parts. This pattern of distribution is consistent with the pattern of inflammatory infiltrates and clinical consequences of diseases such as lupus erythematosus, lichen planus and alopecia areata; further support for LC may be an apoptosis-related cell and / or a target cell for these T cell-mediated inflammatory pathologies.
