翡翠一词最早源于西班牙语plcdode jade,意为佩戴在腰部的宝石。唐代大诗人杜甫诗云:“江上小堂巢翡翠,花边高冢卧麒麟。”可见翡翠二字在中国古代是一种鸟的名称。一般雄鸟为红色,谓之“翡”;雌鸟为绿色、谓之“翠”。到了清代、翡翠鸟的羽毛作为饰品传入宫廷、尤其是绿色的翠羽深受皇宫贵妃的喜爱。与此同时、大量的缅甸玉通过进贡进入皇宫深院、由于颜色也多为绿色、红色、且与翡翠鸟的羽毛相同,故人们称这些缅甸玉为翡翠,渐渐地在中国民间也就流传开了。从此“翡翠”这一名词就由鸟禽的名转为玉石的名称了.在中国,玉器历来被视为是君子的象征。《礼记》曾记载:“古之君子必佩玉;君子无故,玉不去身,君子于玉比德。”传说玉器具定惊、趋吉避凶之效,能保佩戴者平安吉
