I. INTRODUCTION Suspended particulate matter in the Yangtze Estuary has been explored from a chemical point of view. Selective chemical leaching technology is now used to measure the trace elements in different phases in suspended particulate matter to understand the content, proportion and chemical behavior of each phase in the suspended particulate matter. The selective chemical leaching techniques here include the sequential extraction of heavy metal elements on a quantity of suspended particles using a solution of MgCl 2, dilute acetic acid-sodium acetate, hydrogen peroxide, hydrochloric acid, hydroxylammonium and perchloric acid-hydrofluoric acid Tessier et al. (1980) studied the effects of copper and zinc on suspended particulate matter in the Yamaska and Francois rivers of Canada
