“Necessity is the source of creation.” This proverb aptly describes how the STANDARD FLEX concept was born. As early as the 1980s, the Danish Navy faced serious problems of replacement. As a result of the phase-out and aging issues, nearly one-third of the ships will be out of service. There are about 22 warships to be replaced, including six fast attack boats, eight patrol boats and eight minesweepers. From the actual long-term budget point of view, the conventional replacement of a ship is not feasible. In fact, the concept of using standard housings with standard propulsion systems has emerged and the housings have been designed to accommodate a variety of chassis-based equipment and weapon loads that perform a variety of tasks. Standardizing chassis and interfaces will allow devices to be swapped from one task to another in a matter of hours. All tasks sharing sensors or non-chassis-ready devices should be permanently installed on board. In addition, modular and flexible command, control, communications and intelligence systems (C-3I systems) are essential for the control and operation of the weapons and systems they carry. The distributed architecture and open configuration will allow the C-3I system to add or remove hardware and software modules to meet changing new technical requirements. The basic idea behind the STANDARD FLEX concept is to install weapons and non-permanent equipment in standardized enclosures so that weapons and equipment needed to quickly change from one weapon and equipment needed for a particular mission to another can be installed. The significance of the STANDARD FLEX concept is the ability to quickly change the task configuration to suit the new situation.
