Twenty-five male adolescents who migrated to an area of 2,800 meters above sea level for more than one year were examined by echocardiography one month after they reached an altitude of 4,500 meters. They were reexamined after returning to the altitude of 80 meters for three months. The result is: sea level and plateau comparison. Heart rate slowed down right ventricular isovolumic shortening, pulmonary artery systolic pressure decreased; but right ventricular diameter, right ventricular outflow tract and right pulmonary artery diameter no significant difference. The level of stroke volume and left ventricular end-diastolic volume increased, while the heart index and the discharge fraction decreased, but the output of each heart is roughly the same. In addition, the comparison of the plateau reset value of the plateau settlers with that of the plain normals was made.
