The original designer’s purpose was to use it as a long-range transport and reconnaissance aircraft. As the Allied forces stepped up their escort of the Atlantic shipping fleet and greatly reduced the U-boats’ record, the Germans desperately needed a long-range maritime patrol aircraft to provide U-boats with intelligence reconnaissance.
