A new copper-nickel alloy, called IN838 or CA722, greatly increases the resistance to seawater attack and is developed by Nickel International for use in heat exchangers, piping, and other applications that limit the applicability of copper-nickel alloys due to turbulence local. The nominal composition is Ni ~ 15Cu with 0.3 ~ 0.7% Cr added to improve the corrosion resistance of flowing seawater. According to International Nickel Corporation (Inco), the alloy can be used in condensers with water inflow rates as high as 6.7 m / s, about 2.5 times greater than the maximum design flow rate of the popular Cu-10Ni (CA706) alloy. The new alloy is promising for higher flow rates for more uniform flow patterns and lower shear stresses, such as large diameter pipes and hulls. The first use of the IN838 alloy is a brine-cooled air conditioning system.
