The technique of preparing mushroom culture material in 5-6 days has been discussed in detail by Smith and Spencer (1976, 1977) and others, but these studies mainly explore the rationale for rapid culture material compaction. In the past, peat was added to improve the moisture retention ability of the culture materials. Although some peat straw was also used instead of part of the peat and satisfactory results were obtained, the effect of peat-free on the mushroom yield has not been tested.
