This paper describes a method of generating a constant envelope sinusoidal frequency-keyed spread spectrum signal from a phase-coded rectangular pulse sequence. The in-phase and quadrature pulses are summed and passed through a surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter. The fixed-delay characteristic of a surface acoustic wave filter is used to convert a rectangular pulse into a pulse of a specific shape. The paper presents the time-domain and frequency-domain output results of a modulator operating at 70 MHz and a 5 MHz Chip / second rate.
