“碑林”一词最早见于明万历年间赵崡所著《石墨镌华》自序。序云,“余居近周秦汉唐故都,诸名书多在焉。西安頖宫碑林为最。余每至其下,必卧观之,至于忘返。”~①赵崡是陕西人,这里的“故都”当然是指西安,“頖宫”即指西安府学。因此赵i函在这里记述的碑林肯定是西安碑林了。赵崡此序写于“明万历戊午秋七月五日”~②,即公元1618年,“碑林”一词的历史已有390年了,而当时西安碑林已存在了532年了~③。
