国际新闻社是1909年成立的,是美国第三个大通讯社。美国报阀威廉·赫斯特当时创立这一通讯社的目的,主要是给赫斯特系报纸发消息,使这个系内的报纸在一定范围内摆脱美联社和合众社的势力。国际新闻社成立初期,只发国内新闻,后来逐渐地有了其他国家的消息。1945年以后,这一通讯社的国际新闻业务才有很大的发展。国际新闻社的总社在纽约,它在美国亚特兰大、波士敦、芝加哥、哥伦布斯、达拉斯、聖路易、旧金山和西雅图等地设有总分社,并住其他各地设有分社。国际新闻社
