(英刊《Outlook On science Policy》,1989年11月号)
“Sigma Xi,” a 103-year-old honorary social group in the United States, is trying to adjust its role as a network of technology that builds scientific opinion and proposes solutions to global problems. While it had previously provided grants to raise the status of basic research, it now wants to address three major issues: global warming, science education and a greater international competitiveness of the United States economy. The Sigma West Society, with 100,000 members, has chapters across the United States that have their own local bases. This makes it different from some Washington-focused interdisciplinary societies such as the AAAS. As part of its alignment, the institute will move its headquarters from Yale to Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, which provides financial support.
