Due to the record appreciation of the yen and the slowdown in the global economy, which have affected Japan’s economic recovery, the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan lowered its assessment of Japan’s economic prospects in the monthly economic forecast released in mid-October. In response to the continued appreciation of the yen, the Japanese government adopted a new round of measures, including expanding the scale of its purchases of financial assets and providing loans to companies that acquire overseas companies. It re-established a strong foreign currency intervention on October 31 Japan is the fourth time in more than a year to intervene in currency markets). The series of measures have limited effect and can not fundamentally reverse the yen’s appreciation. The recent floods in Thailand also hit Japanese manufacturing. The Bank of Japan lowered its real GDP growth rate to 0.3% and 2.2% respectively in FY11 and FY12 in the October Economic and Price Outlook Outlook.
