英国批判现实主义小说家托马斯·哈代的《苔丝》不仅是他的成名作,也是其最优秀的小说。哈代在向世人展示女主角苔丝悲惨命运的同时,对资本主义社会的法律、道德等方面进行了无情的揭露和批判,小说的副标题“一个纯洁的女人”就展示了哈代对当时英国时期虚伪的社会道德的挑战与批判。在中国,《苔丝》可谓是家喻户晓,吸引了无数的中国读者,所以小说被许多译者翻译,其中译本达七种之多,著名的译本如张谷若版、孙法理版、郑大民版等。
