The purpose of this study was to determine if CO_2 laser could be used to detect the occlusal fissure caries and whether it is more objective and reliable in this way than the conventional probes. The 50 newly extracted permanent molars and premolar were examined with a new probe, initially 34 (occlusal) caries and 16 caries-free lesions were identified. Teeth were placed in physiological saline solution containing thymol crystals to prevent bacterial growth and to maintain the hydrated state. Each tooth was photographed, and a black and white magnified 6x magnification was made from these photographs for later diagnosis. The diagnostic caries were marked on the occlusal surface.
