Japanese encephalitis (hereinafter referred to as JE) is a mosquito vector encephalitis caused by Group B Arbovirus (Flaviviridae). Japan first recognized this disease in 1871. The virus was first isolated from dead patients in 1934 and from the mosquito species by the late 1930s. JE was found to be prevalent in the 1940s, but animal parasitism of the JE virus was not known until the 1950s.
