Cultural exchanges and progress in civilization can not be separated from religious translation. Religious translation was once the top priority of translation studies, and it should be one of the focuses of translation studies now and in the future. China has a long history of religious translation and a wealth of practice in religious translation. However, contemporary Chinese academia does not seem to attach enough importance to the study of this field. The first “Religious Classics Translation Seminar” held in Guangzhou in 2012 was a remarkable progress. The interdisciplinary research perspective that it advocated was supported and responded by scholars in relevant fields. This paper first reviews the main contents of the symposium and evaluates its significance for Chinese translation studies. Then it reviews the second larger seminar held in Qingdao the following year. Finally, the article calls for the continuation of the third seminar and put forward some ideas for organizing a series of seminars on religious classic translation in the future. The author firmly believes that the translation and study of religious classics can help strengthen the foundation of world peace and prosperity and deserve the efforts of more translators and scholars.
