In December 2012, the Hungarian Cultural Minister appointed the new director of the “National Theater” in Budapest to replace Alfldi Robert. The move sparked heated debates between left-wing liberal intellectuals and the right-wing media. Left-wing liberal intellectuals have accused the government of replacing Alfredo for political and ideological reasons, while right-wing media say the dispute is purely a big-eyed left-wing political hysteria. This article does not intend to judge the argument from right and wrong. I only want to explain from another point of view why and why this five-year period has become an unusual stage in the history of the Hungarian National Theater.
