柔性石墨材料是国际上七十年代出现的新型工程材料。我国于七十年代末才开始发展。柔性石墨材料具有高的耐热性、耐低温性、耐腐蚀性、耐辐照性和自润滑性,特别是具有可挠性和弹性,见表1。由于柔性石墨材料具有如此独特的性能,在工程技术上应用范围正不断扩大。除作为泵、阀等的填料及垫片外,还用作辐射防护、柔性导体、加热元件、导弹鼻锥、火箭发动机喷嘴、整流电刷、可变电阻、工业空间加热器等等。
