On December 28, 1992, the State Council approved the official opening of Dongshan Port of Fujian Province to foreign vessels, making Dongshan Port the fourth port of entry open to the public after Fuzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou in Fujian Province. Dongshan Port is located in the southernmost tip of Fujian Province, between the two special economic zones of Xiamen and Shantou. It is 164 nautical miles from Kaohsiung Harbor in Taiwan and 210 nautical miles from Hong Kong. It is the nearest harbor to Fujian and Fujian to Hong Kong and Macau.
