钱钟书先生《谈艺录》讲“寄柳”古俗,别为“折柳送行之俗”与“折柳寄远之俗”两种情况。宋代诗人陈与义《古别离》诗句“千人万人于此别,柳亦能堪几人折?”这是折柳送别。文同《折杨柳》:“欲折长条寄远行,想到君边已憔悴。”这是折柳寄远。赠别寄远,“各明一义,阐发无剩矣。” 在唐诗中,这种“赠别”与“寄远”的分判,已经相当分明。且看折柳赠别例: 白居易《青门柳》:“为近都门多送别,长条折尽减春风。”送别多了,柳条也要折尽了。 邵谒《苦别离》:“朝着相送人,暮看相送人,若遣折杨柳,此地无树根。”岂止是柳条折尽了,再折下去,连树根也快折完(枯死)了。
