Some of the recent trends on the international scene of light weapons have been strengthened, the hallmark of the past 12 months. Despite growing pressure in some areas, such as Singapore’s Chatelet, a dynamic Asian manufacturer, FN and HK companies, the two major European companies, continue to control NATO and U.S. SALW research and development and purchase. U.S. companies seem to be focused on improving the systems that emerged in the late 1960s, such as the M16 and M60, which is an ominous sign for the 21st century. In addition to the special operations of the military and major countries in the Third World, the importance of submachine guns continued to plummet.
