As a result of the rapid economic development, China will be confronted with severe energy crisis and environmental protection problem in future decades. As of 2003, China has become the second largest energy consumer in the world. The overall energy structure in China is characterized by abundance of coal and deficiency in crude oil and natural gas. Concerns about energy security paired with the need to tackle climate change lead to increasing support for the development of new domestic sources of renewable energy. Among renewable energy, forest bioenergy takes up an important position. In this paper, the status of forest bioenergy and related policies were introduced, the main issues on the development of forest bioenergy analyzed, and policy recommendations proposed.
