In China, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus isincreasing rapidly due to aging of the population, increased frequency of obesity, and suboptimal nutritionalhabits.Currently, the number of people with diabeteswas estimated to be 20 million and will be projected todouble by the year 2030.The age-adjusted prevalence ofdiabetes among patients with acute myocardial infarctionhas increased significantly over the past two decades, anddiabetic patients without known coronary artery diseasehave similar rates of subsequent myocardial infarctioncompared with non-diabetic counterparts with a previousmyocardial infarction.Diabetes is a strong risk factor forcardiovascular disorders, including coronary arterydisease.Atherosclerosis accounts for 65%-80% of alldeaths among diabetic patients, compared with one-thirdof all deaths in the general population.
