Outokumpu, Finland, has developed a probe that uses radioactive isotopes as a radiation source in order to analyze a wide range of beneficiated pulp or solution. The elements analyzed were generally chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and lead; the density of the pulp was determined by backscattering. Each probe can simultaneously determine the content of five elements and pulp density. The probe is designed to be immersed directly in the flow of slurry or on a flow-through cartridge that is continuously passed by the main stream sample. Small computers are used to calculate X-ray fluorescence intensity data and provide reports. The accuracy of the probe: 1 to 5% for the raw ore and concentrate flows and 5 to 15% for the tailings flows.
