A few years ago, two teachers in California in the United States started a newspaper column. The purpose of this column is to help beginners and people who read English improve their understanding of the language. Each issue of a feature article titled “Helping a Friend Learn English”, 900 words in length, covering sports, weather, healthcare and more, helps familiarize readers with the vocabulary often used in ordinary newspapers. Since its inception, both authors have been selling column articles to California, Oregon and Canada newspapers on a regular basis - California has a large number of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries and Asia. In an information book jointly published by the International Forum for All-People Education and the World Association of Newspapers, this column is used as an example of how newspapers can contribute to adult education
